Architecture of the platform

The architecture of the solution had to fulfill the required necessities:

  • Scalability of the platform. The architecture had to provide the possibility to use the same platform to integrate simple hardware devices and application integration exchanging thousands of transactions
  • The platform had to use mature and proved elements and technologies
  • The platform had to follow standard integration patterns
  • The platform had to stay simple and flexible

     

The result of our research is the Octopus architecture.

   

Powerful architecture of Octopus

The Octopus architecture uses by default the powerful messaging system MSMQ from Microsoft, but this is not mandatory. In the case of a simple device integration, Octopus can be used without MSMQ. Following this strategy, Octopus can be used and installed for the smallest integration task up to very complex and big enterprise integrations.

Very flexible mechanisms of Integration styles are enabling any developer to work on his own integrations. In order to integrate different solutions or devices, new integration styles have to be developed. The integration styles can be understood as adapters. As of today, Service Plus can already offer many implemented integration styles, interfacing to almost all major manufacturers of Hardware and Software.

Looking deeper inside the architecture of the platform, you can see, that Octopus embodies several nodes of different type. These nodes can be combined in order to create the architecture which is exactly needed for the special infrastructure.

    

Nodes of the Octopus integration platform


The communication and data exchange between systems is a crucial function within the enterprise. In order to secure the data exchange, Octopus offers two mechanisms how the delivery is secured. On one side each node is keeping the data until the transport to the next node is confirmed. The communication between the nodes is message based and in many cases the ARTS standard is followed. On the other side, a separate watch dog process is taking care, that Octopus is up and running.

The architecture of octopus is covering many different architectures of your enterprise infrastructure. Octopus can be installed decentralized on every system in the infrastructure or centralized on one central server or even mixed.  In order to support large infrastructures, the architecture can be clustered and different elements of it can be installed on different systems. The load balancing functionality just makes the integration in large structures simple, secure and efficient.
