Synchronization is the challenge

Evaluating and looking at mobile applications, 2 major areas have to be covered.

  1. The application functionality. It should be easy to extend and to adapt to changes and new requirements.
    2. The synchronization process
  2. The data produced by the mobile device has to be synchronized with host and 3. party systems and applications.

The Service Plus MS4 solution is focusing on exactly these 2 areas.

Talking about synchronization, the following requirements have to be covered:

  1. The synchronization must be possible independent of the hardware manufacturer of the mobile device
  2. Different protocols and interfaces to connect the device have to be supported, i.e. USB, RS2323, Ethernet and other
  3. Different protocols to communicate with hosts systems have to be supported, i.e. web services, http, ftp, shared folder and others
  4. The synchronization has to be flexible and controllable (what has to be done) and should be executed as needed (when should the synchronization take place – real-time, batch, etc.)
  5. It must be possible to synchronize an unlimited number of devices
  6. The solution has to be easily extendable for new devices and for new applications
  7. The use of different user interfaces, for example wizards, defining the synchronization, must be possible.

With this in mind Service Plus developed a solution, Octopus, covering all these requirements based on a very flexible architecture which is shown in the following picture.

The benefits of the architecture are obvious. It is very easy to develop for example an adapter for industrial scanners. The same synchronization tool and mechanism can be used to synchronize own mobile device (MDEs) and Industrial scanners.
In the same way the synchronization adapters for any other device like kiosk systems, price checkers, customer counting devices, petrol station pumps, cash registers or any other data collection device (with or without internal memory) can be implemented.

On the other hand, it is very easy to manipulate the received data and synchronize them with one or more host systems.
The implemented scheduler which can be accessed via web services, http or file interface is taking care of the task what and when to synchronize.
