Octopus at Deichmann, another great success

Another success for the use of Octopus is its installation at the big german retailer Deichmann.  Deichmann is a family-owned company since 1913 and will continue to remain independent. Its nearly 100-year business history began in Essen at the Ruhr river area. This is still the headquarter for the group of companies. Deichmann SE is currently active in 20 countries with 3,000 local shops and employs approximately 30,000 people. In 2010 the group sold 152 million pair of shoes worldwide.

Deichmann had problem to update the prices at the POSs which had no connection to the server. In some cases Deichmann had to run some POS system offline. To provide price updates for these offline POS systems was the challenge.

The manual procedure looks simple but opens several bottlenecks for errors and security (copy changes on USB stick at the server, copy changes from USB stick to hard disk at the POS, execute the import of the changes into the POS item database, control the status afterwards). When the cashier has to execute this procedure, the security requirements and the reaction on possible failures are not covered.

Passing this task to IT personnel or service technicians would be related to high costs and in the case of many stores to a long period of time for the execution.

The target was very clear: simplify and automate this procedure as far as possible, so that there is almost no more user interaction needed.

The result of the implementation of Octopus looks like: the cashier just needs to plug the USB stick into the interface at the front of the POS, everything else is done by Octopus and at the end of the import procedure the user gets a status message.
Service Plus implemented two adapters in Octopus. One is monitoring the USB interface and copying the item changes to the defined folder and the second one applies the changes to the item database, displays the status message to the user and deletes the file on the USB stick.

Service Plus is actually in discussion with several other retailers about integration issues referring to scales and other hardware devices and will soon come up with new adapters for Octopus – the new and flexible integration utility
